Position Overview
The Senior Lecturer – Oral Pathology will be responsible for teaching and supporting undergraduate dental education in Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology, with emphasis on understanding disease processes, microscopic features, diagnosis, and their clinical relevance to dentistry.
The role requires strong subject knowledge, effective classroom and laboratory teaching, practical demonstration skills, student mentoring, academic assessment, and the ability to connect pathological findings with clinical presentation and diagnosis.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching & Academic Responsibilities
Teach Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology to BDS students as per the prescribed curriculum.
Conduct lectures, tutorials, seminars, case discussions, practical classes, demonstrations, and revision sessions.
Explain general and systemic pathology concepts relevant to dental practice.
Teach oral diseases with emphasis on etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, microscopic features, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis.
Cover important areas including:
Developmental disturbances of teeth and jaws
Dental caries and pulpal/periapical pathology
Cysts and odontogenic tumours
Benign and malignant neoplasms
Oral mucosal diseases
Salivary gland disorders
Bone and connective tissue lesions
Potentially malignant disorders
Oral manifestations of systemic diseases
Immune-mediated and infectious diseases
Relate pathological concepts to clinical subjects such as Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, and Radiology.
2. Histopathology & Practical Training
Conduct and supervise undergraduate Oral Pathology practical sessions.
Train students in identification and interpretation of histopathological slides and specimens.
Demonstrate basic principles of tissue processing, staining, section preparation, and microscopic examination.
Develop students' ability to correlate clinical findings, radiographic findings, gross pathology, and microscopic features.
Maintain proper laboratory teaching standards and ensure safe handling of specimens, chemicals, and equipment.
Encourage systematic observation and diagnostic reasoning rather than memorisation alone.
3. Student Assessment & Mentoring
Prepare question papers, assignments, practical assessments, viva voce, case-based activities, and internal assessments.
Evaluate student performance objectively and provide constructive academic feedback.
Identify students requiring additional academic support and provide appropriate mentoring.
Guide students in case presentations, seminars, journal discussions, and academic projects.
Encourage critical thinking and evidence-based interpretation of pathological findings.
4. AI-Enabled & Digital Academic Responsibilities
Use appropriate digital pathology resources, virtual microscopy, image repositories, 3D visualisation, and AI-assisted educational tools to improve student understanding.
Introduce students to emerging applications of AI in pathology and diagnostic image analysis where academically relevant.
Use digital histopathology images and case-based learning to strengthen diagnostic reasoning.
Develop technology-supported learning materials, presentations, question banks, and interactive academic resources.
Ensure that AI-generated information or diagnostic suggestions are verified against standard textbooks, peer-reviewed evidence, and established professional knowledge.
Promote responsible use of AI while maintaining academic integrity, confidentiality, professional ethics, and human clinical judgement.
5. Research & Academic Development
Participate in departmental and institutional research activities.
Encourage and guide students in undergraduate research, case reports, literature reviews, and scientific presentations.
Contribute to research in areas such as:
Oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders
Odontogenic lesions
Oral mucosal diseases
Salivary gland pathology
Digital and AI-assisted pathology
Oral microbiology
Diagnostic pathology
Publish research findings in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and participate in conferences, seminars, and professional academic activities.
Stay updated with developments in oral pathology, diagnostic methods, digital pathology, and emerging technologies.
6. Departmental & Institutional Responsibilities
Support the Head of Department in academic planning and departmental activities.
Assist in curriculum implementation, academic scheduling, practical planning, and departmental documentation.
Maintain academic records, practical records, student assessment records, and other required documentation.
Participate in departmental meetings, academic reviews, quality initiatives, accreditation activities, and institutional programmes.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of teaching specimens, slide collections, digital pathology resources, and laboratory learning materials.
Collaborate with other dental departments for interdisciplinary teaching and case-based learning.
Educational Qualification
MDS in Oral Pathology & Oral Microbiology from a recognized institution.
Valid registration with the appropriate Dental Council/State Dental Council, as applicable.
Additional qualifications or certifications in medical/dental education, digital pathology, research methodology, or related areas will be an advantage.
Experience
Relevant teaching experience in Oral Pathology & Oral Microbiology in a recognized dental institution preferred.
Experience in undergraduate BDS teaching and practical laboratory supervision.
Experience in student mentoring, assessment, academic coordination, and departmental responsibilities preferred.
Research publications, conference presentations, or participation in academic projects will be an advantage.
