Why we do not list other colleges' fees

Three reasons, stated plainly.

1. We have not verified them. JKKN can publish its own approved fees. It cannot verify another institution's, and asserting them would be a claim we cannot stand behind.

2. They change every year. Fees are revised through the fee-fixation process, and a figure that was accurate two cycles ago is now misleading.

3. Families make irreversible decisions on this. A candidate who plans around a stale figure and finds the real one at admission has a genuine problem, often at the worst possible moment.

This is the same standard applied across this site to counselling dates and cut-off ranks. If we cannot verify it, we do not publish it.

How MDS fees are actually set

Three things determine what you pay.

1. Your quota

The point families miss: a private college also has Government Quota MDS seats, allotted through the same counselling at Government-notified fees. That route is widely overlooked — see MDS admission in Tamil Nadu.

2. The fee-fixation framework

Professional-course fees in Tamil Nadu are set within an approved fee-fixation framework rather than at each college's discretion. Institutions submit and fees are approved; they are not simply announced.

What this means for you: the figure a college quotes should be traceable to an approved fee, and a college should be willing to put it in writing. One that will not is telling you something.

3. Your specialisation and the year

Fees are quoted per academic year, and MDS runs three years. Always multiply. A candidate comparing a first-year figure against another college's total is comparing nothing.

What the tuition figure does not include

This is where budgets break.

• Hostel and mess, where availed — see hostel.

• Instruments and clinical materials. In dentistry this is not a rounding error. Ask specifically what is included and what you will buy yourself.

• Laboratory and material costs in prosthetic and restorative branches particularly.

• University examination and registration fees.

• Transport, where applicable.

Ask for the full three-year cost, itemised, in writing. A college that gives you a clean itemised answer is one you can plan around.

Confirm current figures on the fees structure page or with the admission office. Also read the fee refund policy and the UGC fee refund policy — most candidates never look at these until they need them, which is too late.

How to get a real figure for any college — in one day

Step 1 — Write to the admission office, naming the specialisation, the quota and the academic year. Email, so you have it in writing.

Step 2 — Ask five specific questions:

• What is the approved fee for this specialisation under this quota, per year?

• What is the total across three years?

• What is not included — hostel, mess, instruments, materials, examination fees?

• What is the payment schedule?

• What is the refund policy if I surrender the seat?

Step 3 — Get it in writing. A verbal quote is not a fee.

Step 4 — Compare like with like. Total three-year cost including everything, against the same for each college. Not first-year tuition against first-year tuition.

Step 5 — Check the refund policy before paying anything. This is the step people skip and regret.

Warning signs on fees

1. A verbal figure that will not be confirmed in writing.

2. Pressure to pay quickly to "hold" a seat, outside the notified counselling process or the institution's published route.

3. No itemised breakdown — tuition, hostel, mess, instruments, materials.

4. A quoted figure that does not match the published fee structure.

5. Vagueness about the refund policy.

6. Any payment requested in cash without a receipt.

7. A figure quoted only over the phone by someone who will not put their name to it.

Any one of these is a reason to slow down, whatever the deadline pressure.

Planning the three years financially

MDS is a three-year commitment with no earnings during it for most candidates. Plan the whole period, not the first instalment.

Build the full picture:

• Tuition × 3 years, at the quoted per-year figure.

• Hostel and mess × 3 years, if applicable.

• Instruments and materials — front-loaded in the first year for most branches, but recurring.

• Examination and registration fees across the period.

• Living costs for three years without income.

Then ask three questions:

1. Is the funding secured for all three years, or only the first?

2. What happens if fees are revised mid-course?

3. What is the refund position if circumstances change in year one?

The common failure is a family that funds year one comfortably and finds year two difficult. That is a much worse position than deciding differently at the outset — a PG who has to leave mid-course has neither the qualification nor the money.

Ask about the payment schedule explicitly. Whether fees fall annually, per semester or per term changes what a family needs to have available and when.

Is the cheaper college the better decision?

Not automatically — and in MDS this matters more than in most courses.

MDS is a clinical postgraduate qualification. What you are buying is case exposure: patients, procedures, supervision. A college with a low fee and thin patient volume produces a specialist who has not done enough cases, and that follows you for a career.

Weigh fee against:

• Patient volume in the teaching hospital.

• Faculty depth in your department, and how many PGs each supervises.

• Whether the department can actually give you the cases your branch requires.

The right question is not "what is the cheapest MDS seat" but "what is the cheapest seat that will make me competent". Those are different questions and only one of them matters in ten years.
